About HSOA
The Hermiston Soccer Referees Association is a small, yet growing part of the game here in Eastern Oregon.
We take pride in our efforts on the pitch, our approach in officiating the game, is to be the calm in the tempest. Our officials do not make "hometown" calls; we strive to be insignificant to the game at hand. Teams that visit our area know they will get a fair shake here. This association has had the lowest red-card totals in the northwest for any league of soccer for 4 years running. One reason for this success, is the training that we all acquire. Ninety Percent of our Officials are current United States Soccer Federation Certified.
U.S.S.F. Certification requires, 5 continuing education hours. We also are members of the Oregon School Activities Association, this relationship requires an additional level of recertification requirements as well.
First, a unique online test must be completed and passed. Second, stringent yearly background checks. Finally O.S.A.A. demands 3hours of education per year. Eleven of our Referees who officiate at the college level, and must pass the National Interscholastic Officials Association written and physical training test. Members here in the lower Columbia Basin also have and are encouraged to be a part of other neighboring associations; Tri-Cities Soccer Referees Association is one that we proudly work with. The T.C.S.R.A. offers a wide variety of games at all levels of soccer. They have training every 2nd Wednesday of the month September thru July. They are a vital resource of training to our officials; the T.C.S.R.A. has state level referees who are assessors and instructors.
In addition, there is also a retired national referee, who is still a national instructor and assessor. These folks come across the river as a courtesy, to train our local officials on field mechanics every August. Some of our officials also volunteer at the local American Youth Soccer Organization, to help referee games for our local youth. There are still others within our Association who officiate other sports and bring a wealth of experience to our Association.
The bottom line is, we work hard to learn the game we love, give back to the game, and have a blast along the way. If you love the game come and join the team, we all have to start somewhere why not start here?
